Interior Painting

A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel brighter, cleaner, and more inviting. Whether you’re updating a single room or repainting an entire property, a lasting finish starts with careful preparation and attention to detail.

Artisan Painting Co. provides interior painting throughout Greater Victoria, with a focus on protecting your space, preparing surfaces properly, and creating a consistent finish that suits your style.

What can be included?

Interior painting can include:

  • Walls and ceilings.

  • Baseboards, crown moulding, and window trim.

  • Doors and door frames.

  • Closets, hallways, and stairwells.

  • Kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and living spaces.

  • Cabinets, built-ins, and other suitable woodwork.

  • Drywall patching and minor surface repairs.

  • Wood staining and clear protective finishes.

  • Epoxy and specialty coatings for suitable surfaces.

Each project is assessed individually. Your quote identifies the surfaces being finished, the preparation involved, and any specialty work included.

Techniques and specialty finishes

Brush and roller application

Brushes provide control around edges, corners, and detailed trim, while rollers create consistent coverage across walls and ceilings. This approach works well in occupied homes and spaces where individual rooms are being refreshed.

Airless spraying

Airless spraying can provide efficient coverage and a smooth, uniform finish on suitable doors, trim, cabinets, ceilings, and other surfaces. Spray work requires thorough masking and protection of surrounding areas.

Where appropriate, spraying is followed by back-rolling to work the coating into textured or porous surfaces and create a consistent finish.

Staining and clear finishes

Staining can enhance the natural grain of suitable wood surfaces or introduce a different tone. Preparation may include cleaning, sanding, and removing an incompatible existing finish.

Clear protective coatings are selected according to the wood, its use, and the desired appearance.

Epoxy and specialty coatings

Selected concrete floors, utility areas, and other suitable surfaces may benefit from epoxy or another specialty coating.

These projects require an assessment of the surface condition, moisture, existing coatings, and preparation requirements. The coating system and time required before returning the area to use are confirmed as part of the project scope.

Our interior painting process

1. Walkthrough and project assessment

We begin by looking at the areas you’d like painted and discussing your goals. We review the condition of the surfaces, existing finishes, access, furniture, and any repairs that may be needed.

This is also an opportunity to discuss colours, paint finishes, scheduling, and how the work can fit around your daily routine.

2. Colour, finish, and product selection

The right paint depends on both the appearance you want and how the space is used. Bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and busy hallways can have different needs.

We help you consider sheen, washability, durability, and the condition of the surface. Testing colour samples in your own lighting can also help you make a confident decision.

3. Protecting your space

Floors, furniture, and surrounding surfaces are protected before preparation begins. Smaller belongings should be cleared from the work area, and arrangements for moving larger furniture are discussed in advance.

Fixtures, hardware, cover plates, and adjacent finishes are removed, covered, or masked where appropriate. Areas being sprayed receive additional masking and protection.

4. Cleaning and surface preparation

Preparation may include removing dirt or grease, scraping loose paint, sanding glossy or uneven areas, and removing sanding dust.

The amount of preparation varies from a straightforward repaint to a space with worn finishes, previous patchwork, or damaged surfaces.

5. Patching, repairs, and caulking

Small holes, dents, and surface imperfections are filled and sanded as included in the scope. Suitable gaps along painted trim may be caulked to create a cleaner transition.

Larger drywall repairs, recurring cracks, or signs of moisture damage are assessed separately. Underlying problems need to be addressed before the affected area is refinished.

6. Priming where needed

Primer is selected according to the surface and its condition. Bare drywall, exposed wood, repaired areas, stains, and difficult existing finishes may require different preparation and primers.

Some repaints need spot priming, while others benefit from a full primer coat.

7. Applying the finish

Paint, stain, or specialty coatings are applied using the method suited to the project. This may involve brushes, rollers, airless spraying, or a combination of techniques.

We focus on even coverage, clean edges, and a consistent appearance, allowing appropriate drying time between coats. The coating system and number of coats are outlined in the agreed scope.

8. Inspection, cleanup, and walkthrough

We inspect the finished work, complete necessary touch-ups, and remove our materials and protective coverings.

A final walkthrough gives you the opportunity to review the work with us. We also explain relevant care instructions, including allowing fresh coatings to cure before washing or heavy use.

A finish that fits your home

Good interior painting is about more than a new colour. Preparation, protection, and care throughout the job help create a space you can enjoy.
