Exterior Painting

Exterior painting refreshes your property’s appearance while helping protect suitable surfaces from weather and everyday exposure.

At Artisan Painting Co., we assess the condition of your exterior before recommending an approach. From siding and trim to doors and wood features, our focus is on thorough preparation and coatings suited to the surface.

What can be included?

Exterior projects can include:

  • Suitable wood and previously painted siding.

  • Trim, fascia, and soffits.

  • Exterior doors and frames.

  • Railings and architectural details.

  • Fences and suitable deck surfaces.

  • Wood staining and protective finishes.

  • Scraping, sanding, caulking, and priming.

  • Minor surface repairs.

  • Specialty coatings for suitable concrete and metal surfaces.

Different materials require different products and preparation. Your quote identifies the areas included and the proposed finishing system.

Techniques and specialty finishes

Brush and roller application

Brushes and rollers provide controlled application on siding, trim, doors, railings, and detailed areas. Brushing can help work coatings into wood grain and uneven textures where appropriate.

Airless spraying

Airless spraying can efficiently coat larger exterior surfaces. Depending on the material and product requirements, spraying may be followed by back-brushing or back-rolling to work the coating into the surface and improve uniformity.

Masking, wind conditions, and protection of neighbouring areas are considered before spraying begins.

Exterior staining and wood finishes

Suitable fences, siding, decks, and other exterior wood features can be assessed for staining. Options may include transparent, semi-transparent, or solid-colour products, depending on the wood, existing finish, and desired appearance.

Cleaning, sanding, stripping, and drying requirements are determined before application. Products are selected for the particular surface, including whether it will receive foot traffic.

Specialty and epoxy coatings

Concrete, metal, and other demanding surfaces may require a specialty coating system.

Epoxy may be appropriate for certain applications, while exposed exterior surfaces need products suited to sunlight, moisture, and weather. Where an epoxy system is proposed, any required compatible protective topcoat is included in the specification.

Our exterior painting process

1. Exterior inspection and consultation

We review the surfaces you’d like finished and discuss the look you want to achieve.

We check for peeling paint, weathered areas, open joints, visible deterioration, and access requirements. The condition of the existing coating helps determine how much preparation is needed.

2. Defining the scope and selecting products

Your quote identifies the surfaces included, preparation requirements, and proposed coating system.

We consider the surface material, existing finish, exposure, and desired appearance when selecting products. Colour choices are also reviewed for suitability, particularly on materials that may have manufacturer restrictions.

3. Planning around weather and access

Exterior painting requires suitable conditions during preparation, application, and drying. Rain, surface moisture, temperature, and direct sun can all affect the work.

We plan around the coating manufacturer’s requirements and adjust scheduling when conditions require it. Access around buildings, entrances, landscaping, and neighbouring properties is also considered.

4. Cleaning the surfaces

Surfaces are cleaned using methods suited to their condition and material. This may involve washing to remove dirt, surface growth, and loose residue.

Surfaces are then allowed to dry sufficiently before further preparation and coating.

5. Removing loose paint and sanding

Peeling or poorly attached paint is removed, and remaining edges are sanded where appropriate to improve the transition between exposed areas and the existing finish.

Preparation is tailored to the building. Older paint layers may retain some texture or irregularities, and the expected finish is discussed during assessment.

For stain work, preparation may also involve removing an existing finish so the new product can perform as intended.

6. Repairs, caulking, and priming

Minor repairs and suitable caulking are completed as included in the scope. Joints intended for drainage or ventilation are kept open.

Exposed wood and other areas requiring primer receive a suitable product. Rotten materials, persistent moisture problems, or extensive damage may need repair before painting can continue.

7. Protecting surrounding areas

Windows, hardware, walkways, landscaping, and adjacent finishes are protected as needed.

Where spraying is appropriate, masking and surrounding conditions are carefully considered. Brushes and rollers may be used for the full application or alongside spray equipment.

8. Applying the finish

The selected paint, stain, or specialty coating is applied according to the surface requirements and product directions.

We allow appropriate time between coats and work toward consistent coverage and a uniform finish, paying attention to edges, trim, and transitions between colours.

9. Final inspection and cleanup

We review the completed surfaces, address touch-ups, remove masking and equipment, and clean the work areas.

A final walkthrough provides an opportunity to review the result and discuss care and maintenance.

Built on proper preparation

A successful exterior paint job starts before the finish coat. Cleaning, preparation, product selection, and suitable weather conditions all contribute to how the coating performs.
